Throughout my years of schooling and life in general, I’ve noticed myself needing to think outside the box or reshape my approach to different challenges and experiences. The quote, “Win a no-win situation by rewriting the rules,” from Harvey Specter in the TV series Suits, has shaped my perspective on difficult situations and issues I come upon.
This blog post is contributed by an amazing 17-year-old young man in high school who understands firsthand how to navigate this complex world! Thank you AJ DeMaro for your amazing contribution to our readers who are seeking inner success. Keep up the good work.
Rewrite the rules
“Win a no-win situation by rewriting the rules” is a type of mind game. When I come upon a difficult situation or trouble in school or even in life, I have a goal to overcome it. By rethinking it and looking at it step by step, I’m able to overcome it. Everyone has a different mind, so the way I look at something will be different from another. There are multiple ways to rewrite rules. The way I think is right is not the same as your right. We as kids soon to be adults growing up in today’s world seem to be constrained by the already established norms and expectations. We should not bind ourselves to these limitations; instead, we have the ability to redefine the parameters of life and the different situations we come across.
Rewriting the rules is questioning if they are right, and it dares ourselves to innovate and make them better. You often hear people say, “Think outside the box.” You may think this is dumb, but if you really apply this to your life, you will be able to take on new paths and experiences that will make you more successful and passionate about life. You should never accept the “no win.” If you ever come upon that, immediately draw your mind away from that. If you want to win at anything, even almost impossible challenges, you can rethink the rules and make them in a way you can accomplish it. Most of us play a sport or do some sort of after-school activity. We all start somewhere, whether it’s playing basketball, baseball, football, or anything else. We start not being good at the game, and with ethic and determination, we slowly become better and better and realize we are more capable of what we thought at the start. Another example would be when applying to college. Say your dream college prefers that you have a 3.7 GPA or higher, but you have a 3.6. You need to figure out a way to make yourself stand out on your application compared to others even with your GPA that doesn’t exactly meet the requirements. Show them that you’re more than a GPA or grades; show the college that you’re a hard-working student who is passionate about their goals and will make the school a better place. By doing this, you change their requirements and give them more reasons why that school will be a perfect fit for you, even with a GPA that doesn’t necessarily meet the requirements. You are capable of more than you think. If you have big goals and dreams that seem impossible to reach, figure out a way to make it possible. Make it your goal to make those dreams a reality. Find your own path to reach those goals. Don’t follow what everyone else does; have your plan that is made for you and only you so you can be as successful as possible in the future.
The quote, “Win a no-win situation by rewriting the rules,” from Harvey Specter reminds us that we have the power to change our own circumstances. When we are faced with a no-win situation, don’t let yourself give up; instead, think outside the box and challenge the norms by rewriting the rules. By doing that we will be able to turn obstacles into opportunities and achieve success in ways we never thought were possible.
Conclusion
There is more than one way to solve issues, please take the time to reflect before writing things off as a loss. This type of mentality takes practice. Learn, grow, and evolve into the better version of yourself.
