The Happiness Formula (#268)

Each of us strives throughout our lives trying to be happy. Happiness is a key ingredient for a beautiful life. But how do we attain a beautiful life? In this blog post, we discuss the magic formula!

One thing that is very important to fully understand is that happiness in and of itself isn’t always sustainable. You can’t have infinite happiness. The reason is if we had endless happiness we would never truly understand that we were happy. We wouldn’t appreciate it the way we should.

Life is made up of good times, sad times, and bad times. The highs and lows of life are an interesting roller coaster that helps mold us. Some people have extremely challenging lives and never truly discover the goodness that happiness can bring. This to me is very sad. I want each of us to experience lots of goodness throughout our lives.

To achieve happiness we must really understand who we are as individuals. The deep-down stuff that many of us don’t like to face.  Did we have traumatic lives that were filled with chaos? If so there’s a lot of work to do to rise above it. Knowing who we are and how we respond to the things that happen to us is very important in the interest of progress.

If we sit with sadness and anger too long it could end up being a pattern and potentially becoming a characteristic trait. Debby Downer type stuff. Let’s try to avoid that. To do this we must start to find the good in the bad. Learn to become more optimistic and view things with a new lens. It can be tough for some.

We are all chasing happiness and it’s a good idea to try to break it down for ourselves however we see fit. What does happiness mean to you? I read somewhere about an equation of happiness by a gentleman by the name of Arthur C. Brooks. I don’t know much about him but I saw that he referred to happiness like this:

Happiness = Enjoyment + Satisfaction + Meaning

This to me is pretty cool to see. I love fulfillment and the ability to set and achieve goals. Those things make me happy. For years now I have felt a sense of purpose and I know what my why is. I understand what I am here on Earth for.

Like many of you, I get sad. Sometimes I am sad longer than I should be, but I know enough about myself to recognize the signs. When I recognize the signs I go back to my tried and trued method of picking myself up and seeing the goodness again. When I do I appreciate the feeling of happiness more.

Many of us are at jobs that we don’t like just because of the money or security. If you are in a career that makes you unhappy, change it. If your day-to-day life is unhappy, change it. We are not guaranteed time. It is finite so choose what you do wisely. Smile!

I am a very happy-go-lucky kind of guy and I always have been which is a good thing. Making others laugh and smile brings such a sense of warmth to me. My goal is to connect and grow with others to help them reach inner peace and happiness. Do you know what your why is? The happiness formula is a beautiful recipe and when mixed correctly it should yield some pretty amazing results!

Conclusion

Learn who you are. Recognize as much goodness in life as you can and you will start to see the happiness formula unfold in front of you. Do the things that make you happy. Find what speaks to you and make the most of this precious life we have. Pass it on!
