Suicide Awareness & Suicide Prevention (#220)

We are quickly approaching the Holiday’s in the U.S. and many are feeling extreme sadness. During this time of year, many feel lonely, isolated, judged, and confused. This sadness can be so intense that they may be thinking of committing suicide. They want to end their lives.

Suicide is on the rise regardless of the time of year but during the Holiday’s there is a significant uptick. Suicide awareness and suicide prevention are what this post is all about. I don’t want any of you to feel alone. Please know that we care about you.

Ridiculously Enjoy Life is all about maximizing all the goodness that life offers, but there are many times in our lives when things may not be as good. One hit after another. While we are down on the ground at our weakest more things come our way that take a toll on our mental well-being. It is tough, but you can get through it.

Here are some ways to recognize if someone you know may be thinking of committing suicide:

-They may feel hopeless.

-Long-term pain, mental illness, or possibly having a terminal illness.

-Having legal problems, financial problems, or gambling addiction.

-Has an extremely volatile, impulsive, or violent behavior.

-Substance or alcohol abuse problems.

-Attempted suicide in the past.

-Making preparations of personal business in order during times of duress.

-Experiencing recent life crisis or traumas such as losing a loved one, recently being diagnosed with a major illness or loss of a job.

-Person demonstrating unusual and dangerous behavior.

-May be withdrawing from friends and family members.

-Being extremely sad or moody out of the blue or for long periods of time.

-Saying that they want to die or are better off dead.

These are just a handful of possibilities. I am by no means a clinician and there are many other factors that are not listed here. This is just a basic guide to understanding possible signs of potential suicide. You should always take these seriously and never pass judgment on another.

We need to do our very best to be helpful to the world around us. Come from a loving space. If you feel someone you know is thinking about committing suicide, ask directly. Ask them if they are considering hurting themselves. It’s ok to ask. It’s good for people to know that you care.
