Why Self-Examination Is the Key to Lasting Change (#295)

It is time for us to reflect more. Some internal reflection, some soul searching, and some work are in order. We are always moving so quickly through life and we need to slow down to get a full system check regularly.

Bruce Lee (1940-1973), martial artist and philosopher, always believed in himself and his abilities in pursuit of personal growth. His mindset was always geared towards our genuine self-understanding and also adapting as we continue on this journey we call life. Inner work was a way of life for him.

The purpose of self-examination is to have an ongoing awareness of how we feel, act, react, and navigate life’s everyday challenges. We need to understand our own emotions and where they come from. Are we sad, mad, or happy in this moment?  Why do we feel this way? We need to be in control of our own emotions.

With this information, we can better handle the stresses that arise. Self-examination is kind of like a periodic checkup, and we really should make the effort to take a look at our behavior. We naturally go through cycles of ups and downs, and as time goes by, if there are extended periods that aren’t good, our reactions during that time could potentially become a mindset.

For me personally I have been doing self-examination unconsciously for almost ten years. I liken it to a home thermostat. When I am off by a little, for a little bit of time, I re-group with me, myself, and I and examine what’s going on and adjust where needed. It has become easier as time has gone by because I have put in consistent work on myself. Each new day’s experiences gives me the opportunity to really see where I’m at mentally.

We need to learn from our failures and our mistakes and try to look at them as opportunities to grow. Growth is really what this is all about. It’s important for us to carve out our own path in life that makes us happy. Having gratitude and creating fulfillment are some good ingredients.

“Don’t speak negatively about yourself, even as a joke. Your body doesn’t know the difference. Words are energy and cast spells.”

-Bruce Lee

This is such a great quote, and it really makes you think. Or it should. If we say bad things about ourselves, then we will adopt a certain mindset that really just won’t be healthy. Make note of this potential bad habit when you’re self-examining, you may just find out that you are more of a problem in progressing than you would think.

So now that you have turned inward to reflect on your own behavior and motivations, it is time to start making some changes where needed. Growth means change, and change means action. Try not to be too critical of yourself, just start out by being aware of yourself in the present moment. Baby steps.

Conclusion

Self-examination and the process of turning inward do take some time, potentially if you have never reflected in that way. Understanding its ongoing purpose will be a huge benefit for you down the road. It’s an internal audit.
