Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset (#221)

Your mindset is one of the most important sets of beliefs you will ever have. It will define how you see and feel the world around you. The brain can truly have an effect on how you behave. It is extremely fascinating. Fixed mindset vs growth mindset.

In the past, we have gone over both but very briefly. I would like to expand on the two different mindsets and how they can influence and affect your life. It is mission-critical to have your head on straight and ready to conquer your goals. We can help!

Fixed Mindset:  views intelligence, abilities, and talents as inherently stable and unchangeable over time.

(according to Harvard Business School)

Many people who have the Fixed Mindset-

  • seem to feel threatened when their peers become successful.
  • will do everything they can to avoid different types of challenges because they feel they will fail.
  • stay far away from hard labor.
  • can’t handle any type of criticism because they feel they are being overly judged or attacked.
  • try to prove how talented they are or how book-smart they are.

Growth Mindset: views intelligence, abilities, and talents as learnable and capable of improvement through effort.

(according to Harvard Business School)

Many people who have the Growth Mindset-

  • get inspired by other people’s successes.
  • will try to overcome any obstacle in their way.
  • enjoys challenges.
  • like to improve their knowledge and skills.
  • looks for new opportunities.
  • have a good sense of who they are.

If you are the type of person that wants to learn, grow, and evolve you should really be looking at adopting a growth mindset. This will truly let you expand your capabilities and you will understand that you are capable of doing anything you put your mind to. Your world will open up in ways that you never knew were possible. The power of belief.

I haven’t found any good reasons to embody the fixed mindset as it is just so closed-minded and completely non-productive. Wait, let me rephrase that. I believe it is non-expansive. People who have fixed mindsets can be super smart, there is no doubt, however; they will truly never be able to think outside the box with a lot of creativity.

Fixed mindset people just believe that they need to stay in the box with whatever materials are currently there. Hope this metaphor makes sense. Please don’t limit yourself to this category. Don’t continue to have limiting beliefs about what you are capable of. With hard work, dedication, and the will to be open-minded comes beautiful new opportunities for you. I promise!

To progress you should take on the growth mindset and here are a few tips to get your brain going in the right direction.

  • The power of the word yet. “I haven’t done this yet.” “I am not able to do this yet.” When you start paying attention to how you say things you’ll get the understanding as to why you weren’t progressing before. It is a mind game. You have to tell yourself good things and believe them.
  • This can take time and effort. Be reasonable about what you are wanting to accomplish. When you say, “this can take time and effort,” there is a belief that you can do it, but it will just take you some time versus saying, “There is no way that I could ever do that.”
  • I love a challenge! You can do this! Keep thinking these things and it will help you grow.

Conclusion

Having a fixed mindset will limit you on every front, while having a growth mindset will afford you to expand in all areas of your life. Pass it on!
