The importance of having discipline is paramount to anyone who is wanting internal or external success. Hopefully both, right?!
When you hear the word discipline, you may rewind to a time in school where the bad kids got yelled at. The thought is usually negative, none the less. Strict parents, strict teachers, strict Drill Sergeant.
Let’s not confuse, “being disciplined” for “possessing discipline.”
Why would someone need to have discipline? The short answer is that being strict with the necessary good habits that you have hopefully created will set you up in the right way. If you recall a time in college when you were out all night partying and drinking, you will probably realize that not much productivity was happening the following day.
Discover discipline
Having discipline is a habit, a science, and an art. You must be aware of pretty much everything in your world to have it. This was pretty tough for me in the beginning, because I really didn’t know what I didn’t know. Once I learned the importance of good and healthy routine based habits, the goodness started to flow. I then understood that I was building my, “why’s.” Why, was I trying to become successful?
It’s pretty much like ingredients for a recipe. All those additions were key to having an amazing cake at the end! Wait, did I just say cake? Oh, now I want some cake! Ok moving on, the point is that by creating a routine for yourself, you must stick with it. Resist all the other b.s. excuses for why you don’t want to do the important task at hand.
Don’t slack
Wake up when that alarm rings, get out of bed, and get going with your journey. Will power must be on tap to be disciplined. When things get difficult, as they most certainly will remember why you started.
Additionally, it’s a very good idea to actually create a plan for the things that you will need to have discipline. For some people, a big one is actually rising up out of bed in the morning. In the beginning, I had a difficult time doing my meditation. Everyone kept telling me how beneficial it would be for me, but I didn’t know for sure so I wasn’t really serious about trying it out for any length of time.
Enjoying small victories
Once I was actually able to accomplish the first 5 minutes successfully, I realized that I felt a bit different. I didn’t know in what way, but I felt ok. That ok feeling inspired me to create it as an ongoing habit. That habit had such a value to me over time that I put it on my take this sh*t seriously list to be disciplined about it.
Creating the habits, a new mindset, and being disciplined with things that truly meant a lot to me, then propelled them into my daily routines. My daily routines are super important. I truly do my very best to stick with them. Life happens and sometimes things get sidetracked. There are things and circumstances beyond our control that we will have to work with, like mother nature. Raining during the time slot when you needed to go for a walk or run for example.
Who, cares do it anyway! Yes, if it’s raining when it’s time for me to go for my walk at 4:50 am, I will still go. Sometimes I find it pretty refreshing. Other times I find myself speaking to mother nature with a kind voice and asking for her to stop the rain for me.
Oddly, it’s actually worked a lot for me. No joke!
Conclusion
Having discipline isn’t a bad thing, in fact, it’s a very good thing. Many successful people embrace being disciplined because they understand the importance of it. When you have lots of tasks that need to get done, tell your buddies that you can’t play Xbox with them. They may get pissed at you, but hey it’s your goals and your work. Do it! Create a disciplined mindset.
