How to Create a Personal Definition of Success (#293)

What does success mean to you? To many people, the first thing that is said is, “lots of money and power!” Other people may believe that success is measured by their careers, their education, their societal status, and so on.

To me, success is well-rounded goodness of being able to achieve inner happiness and contentment within oneself, being able to reach for one’s own personal dreams, and having healthy and happy relationships. Striving for personal development is paramount to me and should be the first thing people develop. If you don’t know who you are as an individual, then how could you be happy with any external contributions?

This is a question that I want each and every one of you to answer. Growth truly comes from within, and I hope that you will find value in the discovery process. What could go wrong, right?! You will hopefully be able to have a profound sense of clarity and understanding of yourself on a deeper level. A deeper understanding of your mindset.

The purpose of this post is to actually help you create your own personal definition of success, so I really want to make sure we stick to that. But as stated above, if you don’t know who you are, you may not understand the path you want to create and the life you want to live for yourself. Don’t just take a screenshot of some stupid wealthy individual’s Instagram post and call that success. “I’d like to take one of these to go, please.”

That’s not gonna cut it, and it will be short-lived at best.

Here are some ways to create a personal definition of success:

  • Inner reflection: When you are able to do a deep dive of who you are, what you’re about, and what your tendencies are like you will have a much better understanding of what things have value to you. Do some work on yourself a be honest.
  • Define your core values: Paint a picture in your mind of what your fundamental beliefs are. I mean the long-lasting types of beliefs.
  • Describe what happiness feels like to you: This one could be tricky for many of you because we often tend to describe generically and go with the first cookie-cutter answer. This should take you a little bit of time to sort out the temporary happiness feelings and the long-term emotional side of feelings.

BONUS: Live a genuine life.

Look at it as if you are trying to discover your purpose or your aim in life. A target. Things also could change along the way, and that’s ok, but it’s important to keep your personal definition of success close to your heart. Value it and give it all you have. Being internally successful is one of the best ways I can think of that makes sense for the other preconceived successes to fall in line in some type of harmony in your life. Hope that makes sense.

Conclusion

Always look to evolve and grow within; it will lead you to a more grateful and satisfied life. The money and power stuff is cool, of course, but in my opinion, they are significantly empty and emotionless. It doesn’t have the goodness without your core self. Act good, do good, be good, and “success” however you define it will be present.
