Why do we Spend so Much Time Online (#277)

Why do we spend so much time online? For the past 20 years or more the internet has really become an everyday thing for people. Many spend more than 6 hours daily online scrolling through social media, apps, and streaming services. I feel like it has taken over many people’s way of life. I will absolutely include myself.

There is an abundance of social media platforms and we tend to view other people’s lives through a filter lens and dream of a different life for ourselves. Envy and jealousy tend to stranglehold society unknowingly. We compare ourselves to people who we don’t know personally but assume that it’s all roses and rainbows. Wasting time on things that truly don’t matter, it’s not real.

Even if it was what’s the point? Additionally, people waste time just scrolling through smartphone apps that are designed to keep us hooked. Those apps are businesses and even though it’s free to us they will make money by taking your time. Don’t you want more for yourself in life? Think about it. I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, I just want you to open your eyes.

There is so much accessibility and convenience by being connected with our family members and friends across the globe. We have information and entertainment on tap and we seem to just keep going and going and going. It isn’t helping us in our day-to-day lives to get ahead. It’s not the same as having real-life face-to-face interactions.

I believe that many of us are avoiding our real-world issues, we are bored, distracted, and for some reason are trying to fill a void that we haven’t dealt with. We need to get back to social connections that aren’t powered by electricity. We have to figure out a way to get back to the face-to-face. Too many of us have become recluse and have potentially developed anxiety and depression.

People are comparing themselves to others, thus developing low self-esteem. We are replacing organic live interactions with surface online communication. It’s just not the same. We are losing our ability to display and feel our emotions and the emotions of others. Text print will never have emotions.

I have been sucked into the virtual world mainly due to having RidiculouslyEnjoyLife.com which seems to go against the grain of what the name even means. I don’t have a brick-and-mortar location and the online realm affords me the opportunity to decide my time and also connect with others across the globe. So, for me, I must be bound by online chains.

My thoughts are that I am trying to make the most of it. I understand what I need to do online and I make choices with my time every day. Some things will suffer because I don’t spend hours and hours playing the algorithm game. It is important for me to balance my life in the best way possible.

My hopes are that this post serves as a reminder to each of you about where your time is going. If you truly get joy from being online and streaming for hours at a time then that’s ok, that is your decision. On the other hand you realize that you aren’t happy with it then it is up to you to make a conscious change in your life. Instead of wasting time online maybe search for your life’s purpose instead!

Conclusion

The online world is an amazing place full of great information and resources, but it also can take over your world by wasting time looking at crazy cat videos. Make healthy choices with your time. I am rooting for you.
