We believe that if you have an unbreakable spirit, then you have had a pretty rough life full of turmoil. Life is filled with unexpected ups and downs that we continuously navigate through, but I believe that it’s how we absorb these circumstances that really create that spirit. As a young man on an island far, far away I went through many things growing up. Growing up not having a father or a father figure present, I felt in my heart that something was missing. I can appreciate my circumstances of being from a divorced family at such an early age because I had no memory of a father at all. There are lots of families that go through a divorce and one of the parents disappear and never return.
“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”
— Winston S. Churchill
Making friends
My mom was in the ARMY when I was very young and then we moved on to a military installation. Every couple of years the friends I made would move away due to their families being relocated elsewhere, so it was very hard having lasting relationships. At 10 years old or so a family moved in next door that were pretty cool. It was a family of two boys with both of their parents present in the home. I instantly made friends with the youngest which was my age. We liked all the same things and were very much into skateboarding. It was our life.
This family was the type that any broken family would dream of. Meaning, a family of divorce which of course leaves something empty. The father was really cool and was very involved with his boys. The mother was very involved as well and she also liked to bake us cool treats. They regularly went and did fun things as a family and they always invited me along. It felt as if I was a part of their family and I loved it. Then after a couple of years or so they too were reassigned elsewhere.
My heart was crushed. So, again I was left feeling empty and was at a loss for the family connection like that. Don’t get me wrong my family was great, but having a mother and sister only, it was difficult going through puberty and not having any guys present and accounted for. No one to teach me how to be a man. So, I had to become a man on my own.
Becoming a man
Becoming a man on my own was very difficult because I didn’t know what I didn’t know. My spirit was being created little by little as I grew up. Each experience that hurt me or let me down was another piece of the puzzle. This puzzle was to be a very big one with many different pieces. A puzzle piece was created when I endured whatever impactful situation that happened. Going through life’s roads will lead you to many bumps along the way and you have to absorb them the best way you can. Like a shock on a vehicle. Absorb the good and let go of the bad.
I don’t believe that people who have had simple lives and lives that had very little challenges can develop an unbreakable spirit. To me, the saying “unbreakable spirit” means that someone has been through a lot in their lives and was able to overcome many things along the way. I actually think that the hard-knock way of life is a good example of how the unbreakable spirit can be created because that’s the type of life that has so much chaos throughout. You’re tested over and over again instead of things that happen once every five years or so.
3 Ways to create an unbreakable spirit
- Take each of your challenging situations that come your way and put the part where you rose above them into your spirit toolbox.
- When said challenges arise, make sure that you keep reaffirming to yourself the reason you started your journey in the first place.
- Understand that life’s challenges are ways for you to learn things for the future. This builds confidence in your abilities.
Conclusion
Having an unbreakable spirit gives you the confidence to achieve many different things on a higher level. I believe enduring and overcoming negative situations, creates your spirit, but only if you end with your head held high. You must believe in yourself wholeheartedly!
dedication:
the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose.
